WHAT IS A TZOMPANTLI?

The celebration of the Day of the Dead in Oaxaca is one of the main festivals due to tradition, legacy of worship and respect for death since pre-Hispanic times, as part of the projects of our workshop, during the month of October we worked on the realization of two collective tzompatlis from the traditional graphics, with the participation of 24 Oaxacan artists with the elaboration of a skull with the particularity of the work style of each one, this to elaborate with them together two prints of 12 pieces each and with a limited edition.

A tzompantli is named after an altar built by some pre-Columbian cultures of ancient Mexico, with the base decorated with skulls carved in stone and stakes in the upper area to skewer the heads of the sacrificed.

The printing work was carried out by the Panoplia Space Workshop with the collaboration of its members at that time, Mayra Cruz, Ozkr V. and Gabriela Morac.

Tzompantli 2019 is a collective participation project whose purpose was to bring together the work of engravers who are members of various workshops in the city of Oaxaca to honor death on such important days as the Day of the Dead in our country, Mexico.

Both prints are limited run and are for sale.
